Trump Demands Jailing of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as National Guard Deploy in Metropolis

Former President Donald Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker too!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of National Guard troops in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite strong objections from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I will not yield. Now Trump is demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What remains on the path to complete autocracy?"

As of midweek, National Guard units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government pushes forward with its aggressive crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite police data indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including homicides.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard members were scheduled to arrive to the region, with an additional three hundred state military personnel readying for deployment, per sources. Authorities reportedly stated the troops would avoid police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with state guard insignia were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Trucks marked "Disaster Relief" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until early December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in the city in the past month, triggering protests, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit against the federal government, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, urging a court to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "unlawful and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their case is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also issued an directive on Monday banning federal immigration agents and related personnel from using municipal facilities as staging areas for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, he said that Trump is trying to "justify and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic federal law limits the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has stated he would be prepared to invoke the Insurrection Act, which allows a president to send active duty military in regions that are failing to suppress an insurrection or are defying federal law.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has dispatched or discussed sending military units to over ten urban centers, such as major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime across the US has decreased in the past few years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were down nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data released on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens oppose the sending of troops without an external threat.
